Personality: A country boy at heart, Zack dreamed of being a hero. This led him to joining SOLDIER at age 14, to achieve his dreams. Intially he displays a strong and spunky attitude, gaining him the nickname of “Zack the Puppy” from his friend and mentor, Angeal Hewley. At first, his loyalty was to SOLDIER, easily making friends due to his friendly attitude even through many are afraid of SOLDIER. (Believing them to be monsters.) After the death of Angeal, Zack’s attitude leveled out, but he still retained that spark.
True to his charm, he is a ladies’ man, often asking girls out on dates as he did to Aeris Gainsborough after he had fallen through the roof of her church. Very protective of his friends, he would be ready to defend them without a second thought. Even so, he does not hesitate in fighting Sephiroth after the former had burned the town of Nibelhiem to ashes, and he pointed his sword at a friend of his with thoughts that she would return himself and Cloud Strife back to ShinRa. His friendship with Cloud’s is privital, where Zack was the template of Cloud’s attempts to build his memory after overcoming his Mako Addiction.

History: Born in the small village town of Gongaga, Zack’s dreams of becoming a hero eventually led him to joining SOLDIER at the age of 13 in 1997. In 2000, at 16, he had already made SOLDIER Second Class, under the tutelage of SOLDER First Angeal Hewley. Angeal’s words of wisdom and honor had a long-lasting effect on Zack, who wanted to be just like him. During a mission to end the war in Wutai, Zack is separated from Angeal, only to be told by Sephiroth that he had defected from SOLDIER along with his childhood friend, Genesis Rhapsodos.
During his term as a SOLDIER, after his promotion to First Class, he met Infantryman Cloud Strife on a mission to Nibelheim, instantly bonding over a shared “Backwater” heritage. On the same mission, he fought and killed his mentor, Angeal, after he accused himself of becoming a monster. Distraught over the death of his mentor and friend, Zack finds comfort in the arms of Aerith, strengthening their relationship to its strongest point. As one of the last 1st Class SOLDIERs, and with the war with Genesis considered over, Zack takes over Angeal's job of being the emotional heart of the organization.
After Sephiroth burnt down the village of Nibelheim, Distraught, Zack cuts down the doors to Jenova's room. Sephiroth stands outside of Jenova's containment tube, and does not even notice Zack enter. The two battle, and Zack, being a 1st Class SOLDIER, manages to hold his own against Sephiroth for a time before he himself is defeated. Finally, Cloud, furious over the death of his mother and seeing Tifa gravely wounded, takes up the Buster Sword and defeats Sephiroth. After the battle, both Cloud and Zack were taken to be test subjects in Hojo’s experiments with Jenova, the Calamity’s, cells.
Four years later, on December 19th, 2006, Zack has a hallucination of Angeal in Shinra Mansion’s basement. As Angeal flies away, Zack’s will to be free allows him to break free from the testing tube he was confined in, taking Cloud’s comatose body and cutting their way from Nibelheim, the village being rebuilt. The two of them were on the run for about a year until September, 2007, where Zack faces the ShinRa army outside of Midgar, where he is cut down. He told Cloud, who recovered from his addiction, to carry out his hopes and dreams for him and bestowing the Buster Sword to him before passing away into the Lifestream.
